Soul Places

By Savannah Olsen

Can you have a soul place much like you have a soul mate? Have you ever connected with a location and felt instant familiarity and ease? What do soul places have to teach us, and how can we connect with them to better know ourselves and our purpose?

When I was 17, fresh out of high school, I moved to London. I cried behind a newspaper at the airport as it was the first time I have a) traveled overseas and b) traveled by myself not knowing what would happen. When I arrived, I managed to get settled fairly quickly and found instant familiarity in my surrounding. I never felt like I could be myself more than when I was there. I have gone back several times every few years and did just after opening The Good Spirit. Upon doing so, I noticed that a psychic studio had sprung up in the bottom of Selfridges and on the upper floors yoga wear was paired with bondage wear. I remember thinking “all of this makes sense.” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The booming creativity that bridged those two different lifestyles in a cohesive manner which saw similarities in aspects of discipline, practice & altered states was something I felt like I did not see in Canada. Or the leasing agent that saw that a psychic studio could work in a luxury department store amongst high-end home goods and niche electronics.

Here, there seemed to be an appreciation and respect for differences where freedom of expression ran deep and everyone could coexist glued together by long-held decorum.

This was a part of me that was unrealized until I spent time in this space. It taught me to look beyond the surface and have an eye that seeks similarities rather than differences and how everyone and everything can coexist in a way that pushes boundaries but builds connection. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Questions for Reflection:

  • Has there been a particular location where you immediately felt a sense of ease and familiarity, and belonging?

  • Was there anything that you were forced to learn during your time in this place? How do you carry that with you today?

  • Do you love watching films or tv shows that are located in this place? Sometimes this can be indicative of a past life attachment.
